The pipe laying vessel Stingray of Van Oord Marine Contractors had to be adapted in such a way that it could also be used as a cable layer. For this purpose an umbilical chute needed to be integrated into the Stingray. And it had to be done quickly. At Vuicon we love to be tested and we gladly accepted the challenging assignment to design and engineer this umbilical chute.

We turned the design requirements into a basic design. This was followed by a concept, preliminary and detailed design of the complete chute structure. The Chute was 3D modelled in our Inventor software. This model was imported into our FEMAP/NX NASTRAN for further strength analysis and optimisation.  A beam model (see picture) was created for preliminary studies and a combined beam-shell model was built for more detailed local checks. The integrity of the ship’s structure and the platform on which the chute has to be placed was checked as well with FEM analysis.

Shop drawings were made ready for production so the chute could to be constructed in the Middle East region. Another fine design by Vuicon Engineering.
